North Charleston High School announced Devon Smalls will take over as head football coach for the 2018 season on Tuesday. Smalls replaces Sam Lusky who decided to step down in the offseason but will remain with the Cougars as an assistant coach.
"We are thrilled to have Devon take the reigns as several other schools have sought his talents, yet Devon wants to pave his own path." North Charleston Athletic Director Raymond Knauer told Live 5 News. "Devon and I spoke at great length in a meeting today and he is eager to build on Sam's success and continue to push North Charleston football to the next level."
Smalls, who played high school ball at Baptist Hill before playing collegiate at Newberry, has been an assistant with the school this past season.
In his only full season as head coach, Lusky led North Charleston to a 6-5 record in 2017.
