BERKELEY COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - A man and woman were arrested Monday by the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office during a public safety checkpoint, but it's what they did while they were being booked that might turn heads, deputies say.

Chelsie Nicole Spelich, 23, of Summerville has been charged with driving under suspension and providing false information. Brandon Alan Jeffrey, 27, of Moncks Corner has been charged with heroin trafficking.

The pair was transported to the Hill Finklea Detention Center when deputies say Spelich had a baggie fall out of a "lower body orifice". She then ate it before deputies could stop her. Jeffrey took off his shoes and grabbed a substance inside, also swallowing it before deputies could get to him. Both were hospitalized for evaluation before going through booking again later.

Spelich and Jeffrey were stopped at a checkpoint near the Whitesville Fire station. Spelich was driving a white F150 when she pulled up and a deputy noticed multiple torn plastic baggies in the truck containing a powdery substance.

Inside they found three grams of a white powder that tested positive for heroin.
