JOINT BASE CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Joint Base Charleston and Air Force Wildline Fire Center crews are supervising a prescribed fire Thursday.

The fire will be conducted in the northside burn area of the Naval Weapons Station from approximately 10 a.m. until 6 p.m., according to Joint Base Charleston spokesman Marvin Krause.

A prescribed fire is a managed burn, not a wildfire, and is conducted by trained natural resources professionals. These fires are coordinated with the South Carolina Forestry Commission and with federal and municipal fire departments, Krause said.

Authorities say prescribed fires serve many ends, including reducing natural fuel loads present in
the woods, enhancing timber and wildlife habitat, restoring ecosystems and suppressing forest diseases and pests.

Please do not call 911 or the local fire departments to report these fires.

If you wish to confirm that smoke in the area is associated with the prescribed burn, call Joint Base Charleston at 843-764-7555.

For additional information, call the Joint Base Charleston Natural Resources Office at 843-794-7951.
