GEORGETOWN COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - A Lowcountry corrections officer has been accused of sexual misconduct with an inmate.
Officials with the Georgetown County Sheriff's Office say 27-year-old Reginald Smalls Jr. of Georgetown was charged with two counts of misconduct in office and two counts of second-degree sexual misconduct with an inmate after an investigation into complaints of improper conduct made to the detention center staff by inmates.
According to GCSO officials, the investigation was initiated by detention center staff after learning of the allegations.
"As a result of interviews and other findings, it was determined the case was criminal and Georgetown County Sheriff's Investigators were contacted," GCSO officials said in a statement.
Sheriff's office investigators were told a corrections officer had been seen kissing inmates and passing notes.
"Investigators began interviewing multiple inmates and staff," authorities said."Learning the information from those interviews and reading the notes that were obtained, investigators were able to corroborate the initial complaint."
Deputies say on Thursday morning Smalls met with investigators at the Georgetown County Sheriff's Office where he admitted to the misconduct and corroborated the initial complaint.
"Smalls, an employee of the Detention Center since December 2016, was released this afternoon on a personal recognizance bond," GCSO officials said.
