CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - DHEC has reopened shellfish harvesting in certain beds near the Stono River.
The agency had previously closed harvesting from the Charleston Harbor south to the North Edisto River in early March because of a sewer line breach near the headwaters of the Stono River.
"The approved shellfish harvesting areas from Charleston Harbor south to the North Edisto River are once again suitable for harvesting," said Mike Pearson, manager of DHEC's Shellfish Sanitation Section.
The breach wasn't located for a week, during which time the area was still being harvested. Shellfish taken from those beds in the area beginning on Feb. 19 are being recalled, according to DHEC.
An investigation from DHEC revealed all shellfish were distributed in the Charleston area.
