CHARLESTON, SC -

Charleston Southern put together an early lead and pitched well enough in the later innings to down The Citadel 6-3 on Friday night.

Cole German’s triple in the second inning started a rally for CSU. The next batter, Josh Litchfield, drove him in to put CSU on top 1-0. Mike Sconzo’s RBI double later in the inning would extend CSU’s lead. Derek Horton homered to lead off the fourth inning and give CSU a three run lead.

German delivered again for the Bucs in the sixth inning when he drove a RBI single through the left side to start the second rally of the game for CSU. The next batter grounded out to bring home a run, and German later scored when Sconzo reached on a fielding error to stretch CSU’s lead to 6-0.

The Bulldogs began to mount a comeback in the bottom of the sixth after a CSU error extended the inning and allowed the second of two runs to score. A single in the eighth added more pressure as it made it a 6-3 game, but Cody Smith’s quick 9th inning brought home the win for CSU.

Nik Constantakos (2-1) got the win for the Bucs. He threw five scoreless innings with three hits, two walks, and five strikeouts.

Dylan Spence (0-1) took the loss for The Citadel, pitching five and two thirds innings and allowing six runs, five earned, on seven hits, two walk, and one strikeout.

Cody Smith (3) picked up the save for CSU. He pitched one scoreless inning with one walk and one strikeout.

News & Notes

Four Buccaneer pitchers combined for 10 strikeouts. That’s the sixth time this season the Bucs have tallied double digit strikeouts from the mound.

The Bucs scored six runs on seven hits, with all of those hits coming from four players (Sconzo, Horton, German, Litchfield).

Derek Horton’s home run is his first as a Buccaneer. It’s also the third home run total for the team this season.
