Deputies: Argument between father, wife led to child being held hostage in St. George

ST. GEORGE, SC (WCSC) - Dorchester County deputies say an argument between a man and his wife led to a hostage situation Sunday night in St. George.

The hostage situation occurred at the I-95 Pilot Station located at 9587 Charleston Highway near the town of Harleyville, deputies say.

Deputies said they were able to distract the father of a three-year-old girl while they were both in a vehicle. While a hostage negotiator distracted the child's father, the SWAT team made its move, breaking out one of the vehicle's windows and pulling the child out unharmed.

Officers say the man was taken to the hospital after he shot himself in the head. At last check, he was still hospitalized.

The suspect has been taken to an area hospital, according to the Dorchester County Sheriff's Office.

The investigation is ongoing.
