NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

North Charleston's new police hit the streets Monday to march by himself to send a message.

Chief Reggie Burgess, who replaced Eddie Driggers as police chief in January,  said the idea stems from a meeting he had with the Christian and Missionary Alliance weeks prior.

In the meeting, one of the ministers referenced a record number of homicides city of North Charleston in 2017.

"We've got to do it together. It's the only way to make our community safe" Burgess said.

Burgess said he wants to work with the community to help end violence in North Charleston.?
