The Citadel baseball team dropped an 8-1 game to Winthrop Wednesday night at the Winthrop Ballpark.
The game started off well enough for The Citadel (5-7) as William Kinneydoubled to lead off for the second game in a row. Two at-bats later, Ryan McCarthy batted Kinney in to give The Citadel a 1-0 lead.
However, the Eagles (5-8) came out swinging from the get-go, plating seven runs in the bottom of the first off five hits, including a pair of doubles. Winthrop added the final run of the game in the bottom of the sixth.
Kinney, Jonathan Sabo and Jeffery Brown collected the Bulldogs' three hits on the night while the Eagles finished the game with nine hits, including two each from Hunter Lipscomb and Cale Gibson.
Daniel Willcutt (W, 1-1) earned the win on the mound for Winthrop as he pitched the first three innings, giving up just one hit and one earned run while striking out three batters. Shane Connolly (L, 0-1) was the pitcher of record for the Bulldogs.
The Citadel returns home this weekend to begin a 12-game homestand. The Bulldogs will first welcome UConn for a four-game series beginning Friday, March 9. Friday's first pitch will be 6 p.m. with Saturday's action getting underway at 2 p.m. Sunday's contest will commence at 1 p.m. and the series finale on Monday will feature a 3 p.m. first pitch.
