LAURENS, SC (FOX Carolina) -

There’s a new student led initiative in Laurens County. It’s called the Dream Team and it’s underway at Laurens Middle School.

The idea for the Dream Team started last fall. Now, things are officially kicking off.

It all began after students at the school read an article about bullying in class. They decided they wanted to start a program at their own school, to address bullying and other issues.

Their main goal is to make positive change.

Tori Carpenter is one of the 8th graders who pushed for the program. "I hope it gives kids a voice, especially 6th graders as they're just starting to get here and they're nervous," she said.

Another 8th grader, Zion Mills told us they want to make sure everyone feels welcome at school, and to make sure kids have a way to get involved.  “It's to help kids prevent bullying and get kids more involved with trying to stop bullying and to make our environment safe.”

The program has a focus on four areas, including bully prevention, a care team that works to make teachers and school staff feel appreciated, a school store team, which will sell school supplies at a reduced price and the outdoor lunch bunch, which is an idea to let students rotate and eat outside.

Anna Brink, principal of Laurens Middle School, said she is so proud of the kids. "I've worked in middle school 14 of my 15 years and I've never really seen a group of middle schoolers be that determined to take the mantle up and say we really need to make this better.”

The Dream Team already has over 100 members, which is about a fourth of the total middle school population.
