ORANGEBURG COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - I-26 westbound lanes near Orangeburg will remain closed until Saturday morning as crews demolish a bridge following a fatal accident involving an 18-wheeler.

Eastbound lanes are then expected to open Sunday morning. .

Photos from motorists showed the overturned tractor-trailer hit a column on the overpass.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol has put a detour in place from exit 154 westbound.

Drivers are advised to take exit 154 onto US 301 to US 176, then US 176 back to I-26 westbound.

Motorists say traffic was backed up for miles Friday afternoon as crews worked the scene.

SCHP officials say the accident happened at 10:30 a.m. when an 18-wheeler went into the median and struck the bridge.
