GEORGETOWN COUNTY, SC (WCSC) -

Georgetown County deputies are searching for a Hampton County man in connection with deputies call a home loan scheme.

Darnel Altonia Stokes, 46, of Varnville, faces a charge of felony larceny, according to Georgetown County Sheriff's spokesman Jason Leslie.

His wife, Daisy Green-Stokes, 41, was also initially charged but was since cleared of any crime and warrants against her have been withdrawn, Leslie said.

Investigators say Stokes accepted $500 from a Georgetown County resident to finance a new house but said he did not deliver the promised loan.

He is accused of presenting himself as a licensed contractor working with the U.S. Department of Agriculture to help people obtain housing, Leslie said. He met with victims in Georgetown County, showing property that he claimed would be USDA eligible, Leslie said.

Warrants have been issued for his arrest.

Darnel Stokes is described as 5'9" and weighing 310 pounds.

Anyone with information on their whereabouts is asked to call the Georgetown County Sheriff's Office at 843-546-5102.
