BERKELEY COUNTY, SC (WCSC) -

Officials say the Cumbee wildfire at the Francis Marion National Forest has grown to 1,600 acres.

USDA District Fire Management Officer Paul Churchill says the fire centered near Wambaw Cycle Trail is 80 percent contained.

Officials say they expect the fire to be contained on Thursday, weather permitting. Forest Service Rd 161 is closed today btw 166 and Halfway Creek Rd is closed as a result.

Earlier the fire involved 500 acres and was threatening a number of structures in the area, Forest Service spokesperson Pamela Baltimore said

Three fire engines, a helicopter and 21 personnel are being used to fight the fire.

People in the area are urged to watch for fire crews and law enforcement near Halfway Creek Road and Forest Service Roads 161 and 176, near the entrance of the Wambaw Cycle Trail, and at the intersections of Buckle Island and Buckle Island Road B.

Smoke in the area may be heavy at times, Baltimore said. No structures are currently threatened.

The cause of both fires is under investigation.
