NORTH CHARLESTON, SC - For the second straight night, Idaho Steelheads (37-20-4-3) goaltender Tomas Sholl held the South Carolina Stingrays (39-15-6-1) off the scoreboard with a 28-save shutout in a 1-0 victory on Friday night at the North Charleston Coliseum.
Jeff Jakaitis also had a big night for South Carolina, making 27 saves in a losing effort. Team captain Joe Devin finished the game with a team-high seven shots on goal.
The lone tally of the night was scored by Idaho's Will Merchant at 2:49 of the third period on a rebound in front of the Rays' net. Merchant's 15th of the year was enough for the Steelheads as the defense went to work and held SC off the scoresheet for the remainder of the night.
Idaho racked up 31 penalty minutes in the game, but the Stingrays came up empty on the power play in the contest, going 0-for-2. South Carolina also held the Steelheads scoreless on the man-advantage at 0-for-6, including a lengthy 5-on-3 opportunity during the third period.
Friday's result marked the first time all season that South Carolina has lost back-to-back games in regulation to the same team all season.
The Stingrays will now hit the road for contests in Atlanta and Orlando beginning Monday night in Duluth, Ga. with a matchup against the Gladiators at 7:05 p.m.
