MANHATTAN, KS - Griffin McLarty (Buckner, Ky.) and Nathan Ocker (Middletown, Pa.) combined for a seven-hit shutout, and Logan McRae (Florence, S.C.) went 3-for-3 at the plate with a double and a two-run home run to lead the College of Charleston baseball team to a 6-0 series-clinching win over Kansas State on Saturday afternoon.
The win marks College of Charleston's (15-5) sixth shutout of the season, which puts the Cougars one shy of tying the single-season record of seven set in 1994. Charleston held Kansas State (10-8) off the board for the second consecutive game, while sealing its second series win of the season over a Power Five school, and fifth overall.
McLarty continued his near-perfect start to the season, scattering six hits across seven shutout innings to lower his team-leading earned run average to a miniscule 0.59. The sophomore right-hander also struck out four to improve to 4-0 on the season. Ocker tossed two scoreless frames to complete the shutout.
McRae paced the offense with a 3-for-3 effort that included a double and a two-run homer in the ninth that extended the lead to 6-0. Joey Mundy (Huntington, W.Va.) and Luke Morgan (New Lenox, Ill.) each collected two hits, while Tommy Richter (Wayne, Pa.) drove in three runs and Ari Sechopoulos (Windsor, Ontario, Canada) launched his second solo home run of the season. Dupree Hart (Rock Hill, S.C.) reached on a leadoff single in the third to extend his reached-base streak to 36 games dating back to last April.
Jake Biller and Trent McMaster collected two hits each to lead the way for Kansas State offensively. Gabe Littlejim allowed four runs on 10 hits in six and one-third innings to take the loss. Andrew Stratman surrendered two runs in two frames, while Alex Belch recorded two outs in the ninth.
