Residents voice environmental concerns about proposed car wash on James Island

JAMES ISLAND, SC (WCSC) - Some James Island residents have environmental concerns about a potential new car wash on James Island.

The initial proposed location for the Auto Bell wash would be in the 700 block of Folly Road next to the Huff's seafood until the company withdrew their application with the board of zoning appeals on Tuesday night. The new waiver expected to be submitted next month would include the Title Max property as well as the land next to Huff's.

Residents in the area don't care for the plan because they're concerned about the environmental impact on Ellis Creek.

"We have a grand tree, we have a creek," Mary Edna Fraser, who lives near the creek said. "The runoff of all that bacteria, the oil, the gas, the dirt could go straight into our creek."

Those who live in the area also say two car washes in the area also diminish the need for another one.

Auto Bell is planning a public hearing when residents can have their voice heard on April 3.
