Lowcountry native Shelby Rogers has withdrawn from next month's Volvo Car Open on Daniel Island due to an injury.
Rogers suffered a muscle injury to her right arm during her loss at the Australian Open earlier this year and has not fully recovered yet.
She released a statement through the tournament saying "It has been a very tough year for me and it breaks my heart I will not be able to compete in my favorite tournament. I absolutely love these fans and the whole city has been supportive of me since the beginning of my career. As difficult as it is, I know this is the right choice in order for my body to heal and be ready to play again. I have so many great memories here and I am looking forward to coming back to play next year."
So sad I won’t be competing but I will still be at the @VolvoCarOpen supporting such a fantastic event! Excited to meet y’all there and enjoy some great tennis! ????#Charleston pic.twitter.com/IyhwRKoFPH— Shelby Rogers (@Shelby_Rogers_) March 21, 2018
Rogers has only been able to play in two matches so far in 2018 losing both. Her ranking has dropped from 48th in the world at the beginning of the year down to 81st.
