JAMES ISLAND, SC (WCSC) - Hugo Bernard shot a bogey-free 4-under 67 on Thursday to take a 1 shot lead after the opening round of The Azalea Invitational at the Country Club of Charleston.

Bernard, who won the Canadian Amateur Championship in 2016, is also a former Division II national champion from St. Leo University.

High School seniors Ryan Hall and Viraj Garewal are each 1 shot back at -3 after the first round. Hall is a South Carolina commit while Garewal is committed to Davidson.

Other notables include former Azalea champion Todd White who shot 5-over for the day and the reigning US Mid-Amateur Champion Matt Parziale, who'll be playing in next months Masters, who shot a 1-over 72.

Round 2 kicks off on Friday.
