KNIGHTSVILLE, SC (WCSC) - The Knightsville Shopping Center could be getting a makeover.
It's located near the intersection of Central Road and Orangeburg Road in Summerville.
Franklin Ridge of South Carolina has submitted layout plans to the Town of Summerville's Commercial Design Review Board.
Summerville's Zoning Administrator Tim Macholl says the plans include a new anchor tenant to replace the former Mr. K's Piggly Wiggly, a gas station at the front of the site along with a fast food restaurant.
The proposals also include building an office space or retail space near Devon Road which is next to the shopping center.
"Knightsville is definitely a growing area," Macholl said. "Right now it's right on the edge of where the end of Summerville is.... and hopefully with the redevelopment of the Knightsville Shopping Center they'll have the amenities and services that they need."
The developer must go through more levels of approval before construction can begin which could be as early as the end of this year.
Macholl says town council is looking into a request to annex land from Dorchester County into Summerville for development of new homes in the Knightsville area.
As many as 300 town homes or single-family homes could be built in the area.
The shopping center proposal also looks to enlarge a stormwater pond, upgrade the parking lot and the facade of the buildings.
City officials say the current tenants will remain.
