NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - A car crash damaged a power pole near Joint Base Charleston leaving a few thousand people without power for a short time Sunday evening.
The downed power lines sparked a fire on the roadway next to a vehicle, according to video obtained by a witness at the scene.
The crash was reported in the 6700 block of Dorchester Road at 6:15 p.m., Charleston County dispatchers said.
Dorchester Road was blocked off while SCE&G crews worked to make sure the downed lines were de-energized. Traffic was reportedly backed up for a half-mile before the roadway reopened.
Some SCE&G customers said their power was only off for a few minutes.
At 6:19 p.m., SCE&G's outage map was reporting 3,478 without power. But within a few minutes, that number had dropped to 1,391, according to SCE&G spokesperson Rhonda O'Banion.
Power has since been restored with the exception of a few pockets of customers. At 7:25 p.m., SCE&G reported that less than 80 customers were still without power.
North Charleston Police, Fire and EMS responded to the scene.
There was no immediate word on injuries.
