MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (WCSC) - A Mount Pleasant homeowner is trying to figure out what his next step is after his house went up in flames last week.
The fire happened on Hawthorne Street last Wednesday.
The homeowner, Michael Dutton, has lived there for five years.
The fire was originally deemed suspicious, a reason Mount Pleasant Police and DEA agents were called to the scene.
"When they told me what they were looking for it just blew my mind, and I was able to relax knowing that was just insane allegations," Dutton said. "He said I was a crystal meth user and that I had a large manufacturing facility."
The cause of the fire has since been ruled undetermined – meaning investigators could not find out what caused it.
On top of many of his belongings, Dutton said he lost all of the work on cancer research he had been doing.
"For the last 20 years I have been following up and have been doing work on something called MOR which is morbidity oscillation rate," Dutton said.
Moving forward, Dutton and his fiancée, Leslie, are taking it one day at a time.
