Coastal Carolina graduate senior Lee Sponseller, who hit two grand slams, was voted the Community Coffee Sun Belt Baseball Player of the Week by the league’s head coaches, the conference announced today.
Sponseller (Mason, Ohio) helped Coastal go 4-0 for the week with a win over #10 Clemson, thanks to his walk-off grand slam, and a weekend series sweep over #30 Texas State, hitting another grand slam. Overall, he provided the “game-winning” hit in three of the four games. He had a hit in all four games, scored five runs, had 10 RBI and walked four times. With is effort, Sponseller leads the Sun Belt in both on base percentage (.506) and slugging percentage (.667).
His heroics started in a mid-week win over #10 Clemson. With the game tied 5-5 in the ninth inning, Sponseller hit a walk-off grand slam for the 9-5 win.
In game one of the Texas State series, he delivered an RBI single in the third inning for a 1-0 lead. He later walked and scored as Coastal went on to win that game 8-0. In game two of the series and the game tied 2-2 with two outs in the fifth inning, Sponseller hit his second grand slam of the week to put the Chants up 6-2. Coastal would pull away and win 11-3. In game three, he had an RBI double in the third inning to put CCU up 2-1. For the game, he would score two runs and walk three times in the 7-3 victory.
Sponseller is riding a 10-game hitting streak with 12 runs, 12 RBI and 12 walks over the span. This season, he is batting .333 with 18 walks, 20 runs scored and 21 RBI. Of his 20 hits, 11 have gone for extra bases including six doubles, a triple and four home runs.
Sponseller transferred to Coastal after playing three seasons at Ohio Dominican, where he graduated in the spring of 2017 with a degree in finance. He was a two-time Academic All-America at Ohio Dominican and a two-time, first team All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference selection.
Coastal Carolina will play at #30 College of Charleston Tuesday (Mar. 27) at 6 pm and stay on the road for a three-game set at Georgia Southern this Thursday, Friday and Saturday,
