CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - The city of Charleston doesn't know who is running an Instagram account claiming to belong to the city.
@charlestonsc has more than 76,000 followers on the social media platform. It claims to be the official account of the city in its description.
"Despite its self-identification as the 'Official Account of Charleston' and link to the city's official website, this Instagram account is not affiliated with the city of Charleston, nor is it run by the city's communications staff," city spokesman Jack O'Toole said in a statement. "Instagram has been notified, and the city's legal department is working to address the matter. The city of Charleston does not currently operate an official Instagram account."
A caption on a recent post used the first person plural "we" in a recent post, which would cause users to assume its speaking for the city. Instagram has not given the account an official blue checkmark which would verify the account.
City spokeswoman Chloe Field confirmed that the city has reached out to Instagram officials through their Facebook page. The city has also tried to reach the account through direct message and hasn't received a response.
The city doesn't necessarily have an end goal but would like the account to change its branding away from speaking on the city's behalf, according to Field.
