GOOSE CREEK, SC (WCSC) - Goose Creek residents have elected a new mayor.
Greg Habib was elected mayor in Tuesday's election with 1612 votes, according to unofficial results.
Incumbent Michael Heitzler, who's been the mayor for 40 years, received 1544 votes.
"It's been six weeks of a lot of hard work," Habib said following the announcement of his win."I'm proud of the work that we did with my son and my supporters."
Heitzler has been mayor since 1978, and Habib spoke about winning against the long running mayor.
"[Heitzler] did great things for this city," Habib said."I certainly appreciate his service to this city."
Berkeley County voting officials say the number of votes cast on Tuesday surpassed the number of votes cast in the last mayoral election.
Earlier in the day, a number of voting machines were malfunctioning causing voters to use paper ballots as crews worked to solve the issue.
No tampering is believed to have taken place, according to Berkeley County board of voter registration director Adam Hammons.
This morning, the polling place opened properly and an error came up on the machine with the first voter.
The state election commission has been called.
