NORTH CHARLESTON (WCSC) -

A new senior center in North Charleston scheduled to open Thursday is the first such facility in the city serving residents aged 50 and up.

Located at 6255 Dorchester Road, the 11,000 square foot facility includes a gym, an indoor exercise pool, pickleball courts and a coffee bar among other amenities.

“With the addition of The Senior Center at Dorchester Road, it rounds out and enhances our already vast recreational and cultural offerings to the senior citizens of North Charleston,” North Charleston Mayor Keith Summey said in a statement.  “Through the many offerings and inviting atmosphere and staff, I envision this center as a focal point of the community to bring our residents even closer together.”

The Lt. Governor’s Permanent Improvement Project Grant Program provided $350,000 towards the construction of the facility while the total cost was $5 million.

The center will operate Monday through Thursday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Fridays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Members must be over the age of 50. The cost for membership is $10 per month or $100 per year for North Charleston residents and $20 per month or $200 per year for non-residents.

Other activities include board games, yoga, and a scheduled book club.A second senior center is scheduled to open at 8718 South Antler Drive early in the summer of 2018. A ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday with an open house following until 2 p.m.
