CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Another plant thief is on the loose in Wagener Terrace in downtown Charleston.
Just after 1 a.m. Saturday, plants were ripped out of the ground at a newly landscaped business off Oswego Street, according to a police report.
The owner of the building where this happened posted video on Facebook saying this has happened several times since the new year.
"I saw the post on Facebook yesterday on the neighborhood page and it's pretty shocking that somebody would go through such an effort to steal plants," said Mike Dodd, who lives in Wagener Terrace.
The video showed a man walk up to a business and start to pull up plants.
He has some trouble getting the first plant unhooked from the water system. Eventually, he gets both plants out of the ground and walked off with them.
You can see he has some trouble getting the first plant unhooked from around the watering system.
Neighbors and those who work in the neighborhood are in disbelief
"Why would people do that?" said Camela Guevara, who works in Wagener Terrace. "It's kind of rude – but also what a weird thing to steal."
The owner said he has lost about a dozen plants to the same person – this was just the first time the cameras were rolling.
The man, however, is wearing a hoodie and dark pants and you can't really see his face – a reason police can't do anything yet.
The owner filed a police report and does plan to press charges if the man is caught.
