CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - The Charleston Fire Department is investigating the cause of a house fire.

Charleston County dispatchers say they received at 8:59 a.m. about a fire on Cooper Street near Drake Street.

An initial investigation revealed one person was in the home and discovered the fire on the first floor and went to grab a fire extinguisher on the second floor but couldn't return to the first floor due to the amount of fire and smoke.

The occupant then reportedly went to the balcony of the building and called for help.

According to a social media post from the Charleston Fire Department, contractors working on an adjacent property were able to rescue the occupant from the balcony of the burning house.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
