FRIPP ISLAND, SC (WCSC) -
A Facebook post states it is not how Fripp Island treats its wildlife.
Officials at a South Carolina resort are looking for the people who harassed an 11-foot alligator by throwing carrots at him, calling the action "a new level of stupid."
The Fripp Island Resort Activity Center posted about the harassment Friday on its Facebook page.
"We know some of Fripp's wildlife is amazing, but this is not how appreciation, respect, or admiration work," the post states. The post also includes the hashtag #DarwinAward, a reference to a popular tongue-in-cheek honor designed to recognize people who supposedly improve human evolution by taking actions that could be fatal, thereby removing themselves from "the gene pool."
Center officials say they have a description of the people responsible and say those responsible could face a $200 fine per carrot thrown and up to 30 days in jail, according to state law.
The Island Packet in Hilton Head reported Fripp Island naturalist Jessica Miller said the people were lucky because the large alligator didn't respond and later slid back into the water.
Wildlife experts say that most attacks occur when humans feed, poke or swim near alligators.
"Y'all, make good choices. Don't be stupid," the post states.
