CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - A Charleston County jury convicted a man of armed robbery Wednesday before a judge sentenced Wakeane Rice to 13 years in prison.

Rice responded to a Craigslist ad for an iPhone in December 2016 and agreed to meet the victim in the Hominy Grill parking lot. He took the phone from the victim, backed away and reached into his pocket to remove what the victim thought was a handgun, according to Ninth Circuit Solicitor Scarlett Wilson.

He then left the scene in a vehicle and the victim called 911 and described the car as it sped away. The car was found four days later in North Charleston when police tried to pull him over and he tried to flee again but was then apprehended, Wilson said.

The iPhone box and a handgun magazine were found in the vehicle. Rice admitted to taking the phone in an interview with police, but denied having a gun, according to Wilson. The victim then identified Rice out of a photo lineup as the robber.

The jury convicted Rice after 30 minutes of deliberation.
