Play Ball! Charleston RiverDogs lift lid on 25th season with home opener Thursday night

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - The sound of cheering fans and bats cracking will be heard again soon at Joe Riley Park.

The Charleston RiverDogs open their home slate Thursday night against the Kannapolis Intimidators with Charleston mayor John Tecklenburg scheduled to be in attendance. Fans will also receive a 2018 RiverDogs schedule magnet while supplies last.

There was some concern at The Joe Wednesday night after a game between The Citadel and the College of Charleston was suspended because of a lighting malfunction. Thursday morning, the lighting situation appeared to have been resolved.

The New York Yankees Single-A affiliate formally opened the season last week on the road, dropping three of four games to Lexington before taking two of three from Rome to enter Thursday night 2-4 on the young season.

Right fielder Steven Sensley and third baseman Chris Hess have both stood out in the early going. Both are hitting. 391 and Hess has been particularly impressive at the plate with three home runs and seven RBIs to his credit.

Every Friday night this season is also Live 5 News night at Joe Riley Park. A contest to win tickets to Friday night's game can be found here. 

The team also has some exciting promotional nights in store for fans this season. April 14 is "Joseph P. Riley and the Amazing Technicolor Ballpark", May 3 is "Jamaican Bobsled Night" while July 12 marks "Buzzfeed Night" at the ballpark.

Some new food offerings will also be available this season including a $175 hot dog and champagne package.

The Riverdogs are also bringing back some alumni this season as part of their "Way Back Wednesday" series with Aubrey Huff (April 25), Mitch Hilligoss (May 2) and Dan Wheeler (July 11) all expected to make appearances this season.
