CHARLESTON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) -

The city of Charleston begins its extended parking meter hours Monday.

Parking meter hours are scheduled to be extended until 10 p.m.

Warnings were issued from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m. last week people about the coming change.

Parking was only enforced from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. but now extends four more hours.

“It’s not practical, it’s too expensive,” Hannah Rawles said.

She works two retail jobs on King Street.

Rawles said she parks in “free zones” downtown because she can’t afford metered parking.

“I would rather have the ability to walk to my car at the Battery 15 to 20 minutes away," Rawles said. "I feel safe walking there even at 9 or 10 p.m. The further you get up on King [Street}, the more risky it is to be alone.”

Other hospitality workers agree meters make working downtown difficult.

“I work downtown, Charleston Place, so that’s why I choose this. I’m upstairs doing my work and I can’t leave it to put money in the meter. It’s killing my time,” said Mary Gaston who works at the Belmont Charleston Place downtown

Gaston started using the Hospitality on Peninsula shuttle system (HOP).

It’s a parking lot on Morrison Drive where drivers can play a flat fee of $5 for the entire day. They hop on one of the buses that arrives every 15 minutes and it takes them to multiple stops downtown.

Gaston started using this system last week. On Monday, she said it's part of her daily routine.

“I’m having fun. It’s not crowded or fussy, I get to work on time,” Gaston said. “Bingo!”

You’re required to pay the meters Monday through Saturday.

On Sunday, meters are free.
