ORANGEBURG COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - The Claflin University president announced his retirement Tuesday.
Dr. Henry Tisdale served the institution for more than 20 years. His retirement will take effect on June 30, 2019.
"I am honored to serve Claflin in this leadership role," Tisdale said in a statement. "I am thankful for the Claflin community that embraced my hopes, dreams and vision for the University. I never felt alone in the process to move the University forward. This has been a rewarding journey and a mission to make a difference."
He arrived as school president in 1994 after graduating from it in 1965. It expanded significantly during his tenure, including more than doubling the student population with more than $50 million in improvements and upgrades. During the 2016-17 school year, Claflin announced its new bachelors in nursing and registered nursing program.
Tisdale had also previously been named NAACP Educator of the Year.
