SUMMERVILLE, SC (WCSC) - A deputy with the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office, who was shot in the line of duty earlier this year, has been promoted to corporal.
BCSO officials say Cody Gooch received the promotion last week.
"I am ever so grateful that Deputy Gooch is now Corporal Gooch," Sheriff Duane Lewis said."Cody is a great deputy who has distinguished himself with his performance and I am glad that he is going to be able to return to full duty."
Gooch was shot on March 2.
During his hospitalization, Lewis said Gooch asked him ,"Sheriff, can I still try out for the corporal's test next week?"
The man accused of shooting Gooch and firing at two other deputies, Calvin Lorenzo Middleton, 31, faces three charges of attempted murder, according to South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.
Deputies responded to a report of a domestic dispute at approximately in the 1000 block of Pine Tree Drive. According to investigators, a man who was armed with a weapon was threatening his wife.
The sheriff's office say Gooch saw the suspect vehicle and conducted a traffic stop. A report states as Gooch was approaching the vehicle, the driver's door opened and Middleton shot the deputy.
Gooch and two other deputies then returned fire, "immobilizing" Middleton, authorities said.
Both Gooch and Middleton were taken to Trident Hospital for treatment and released.
