CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Before your family hits the road for a warm-weather vacation, make sure your car is ready, too.
We often talk about winterizing our cars, preparing them for cold weather. But hotter temperatures can also put a strain on your family vehicle.
Senior Technician Chad Hurcomb with Honest-One Auto Care of Charleston went over a pre-road trip checklist with us.
"Preventative maintenance is key when you're dealing with your car," Hurcomb said. "This time of year, a lot of customers are on the road, visiting family members, things like that. Heat and friction can affect mainly rubber. So tires belts, hoses, wipers, things like that."
He suggested doing some checks on your own at home, such as oil and fluid levels and quality.
"Another thing you can check is your air filter. Some of them are pretty accessible. Just pull up your air filter and look at it – see what's in between it. Does it feel old, dry, dirty?"
He added, "If I'm going on any kind of vacation I always check my tag lights, brake lights, my blinkers, my headlights. Things officers are looking for. This can really prevent an easy ticket."
Rotating tires, checking tire pressure and tread depth, and getting an alignment can make travel much smoother. Plus, he suggests, make sure your vehicle's air conditioning is running nice and cool.
The key, said Hurcomb, is that a little time and money on maintenance now could save you a lot of hassle and cost down the road.
