Bucs Fall to Radford in Series Opener

RADFORD, VA -

A potent Radford (16-21, 7-9) offense scored runs in seven of eight innings as the Highlanders powered past Charleston Southern (12-28, 3-13) in 12-6 win on Friday night.

Radford plated at least one run in every inning except the fifth. Their big innings came when they scored two runs in the third and five in the seventh, four coming from a grand slam by Garrett Matheny. He made a big impact for the Highlanders, going 3-for-4 from the plate with five RBIs.

The Bucs managed to keep pace with Radford in the early innings. Doubles from Ryan Stoudemire in the second and fourth innings brought home three runs total for the Bucs. In the fourth, Stoudemire scored on a double from Kyle Vesnesky to tie the game at four. After the Bucs fell behind by a wide margin, Christian Maggio brought home two runs with a home run in the eighth inning.

Cameron Fritz (3-0) was credited with the win for Radford. He worked four innings with three runs on four hits, one walk, and three strikeouts. 

Evan Nations (1-2) took the loss for CSU, pitching three and one third innings and allowing five runs, two earned, on seven hits and one walk.

News & Notes

The six runs scored tonight by the Bucs is the most they’ve scored in a loss this season.

Christian Maggio hit his first collegiate home run tonight.

Ryan Stoudemire has seven hits in the last 11 games since earning a spot in the lineup.

Seth Owens has not allowed a run in his last six appearances.
