CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - The Charleston city council will officially appoint a new fire chief for the city Monday.

Curia is currently the fire chief in Durham, North Carolina, where he worked decades for the city's fire department. In his years or service in Durham, Curia was a firefighter, fire technician, fire captain, and chief officer. He has also been the department's chief since 2013.

He officially starts as the new fire chief on July 30 and has 28 years of fire service experience, including 15 years as a chief officer.

Curia replaces former chief Karen Brack who resigned in March 2017, Brack was hired in 2012.

Other candidates included Cary, N.C. fire chief Raymond Allan Cain, and Kansas City, MO fire chief Paul J. Berardi.
