NORTH CHARLESTON (WCSC) - The area of I-526 near Rivers Avenue can be difficult to navigate after the sun goes down because of the lack of functional lighting on the highway.
So far in 2018, there have been 33 crashes on the stretch of I-526 from Virginia Avenue to Clements Ferry Road, with most of those coming at night.
A district engineer said there are a number of areas in the wiring that have deteriorated and transformers in the area have also blown. He estimated a full repair of all the lighting could cost upwards of $2.5 million.
Another issue isn't the full width, but a Department of Transportation official added that the issue is funding and a temporary solution could happen this summer to restore 97 percent of the lights.
