'Take Back the Night' aims to raise sexual assault awareness in Lowcountry Thursday

CHARLESTON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - People across the Lowcountry will "Take Back the Night" Thursday to raise awareness about sexual assault.

A march and candlelight vigil will take place at the same time in Charleston, Berkeley and Dorchester counties. Each location will have a speaker, a half-mile march- a moment of silence and a vigil to honor survivors of sexual assault.

The Charleston event will take place at GageHall at the Unitarian Church, The Dorchester County event will take place at Doty Park and the Berkeley County event will happen at Goose Creek City Hall, all from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

The first official Take Back the Night in the U.S. was held in Philadelphia in 1975 following the fatal stabbing of a woman walking home alone.
