Thunderbirds cancel appearance at N. Charleston air show

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - The Thunderbirds won't be seen in the skies over Charleston this weekend.

The team's appearance was previously in question after Maj. Stephen Del Bagno was killed during a performing routine exercise at Nellis Air Force Base.

An Aeroshell Acrobatic team will perform as the headliner in place of the Thunderbirds, according to Joint Base Charleston spokesman Marvin Krause.

The training needed for the Thunderbirds to train a new pilot was cited as the reason for the cancellation. Maj. Nick Krajicek will join the team for the remainder of the 2018 season.

"To facilitate Krajicek's requalification training, the Thunderbirds' participation at the Charleston Air Show and the Fort Lauderdale Air Show have been canceled," the team said.
