Fallen K-9 officer honored by North Charleston community

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Members of a North Charleston community gathered to celebrate the life of a fallen K-9 officer.

On Friday, in the tradition of Arbor Day, a memorial tree was planted at Colonial Grand at Cypress Cove apartments in West Ashley where Mojo's handler, Officer Brandon Van Ausdal, used to live.

On Feb. 15, Mojo was killed in a crash on Rivers Avenue in February.

State troopers say the crash was caused by a man who had been drinking.

Former assistant property manager Josh Slade says that it was important for the community to honor the life of Mojo.

"He was a part of this community.  He was a big part of our resident's lives.  They knew him when they saw him and they were always excited to see him," he said.  "We could always count on him if we needed something."

Food and supplies were collected for the Animal Society through the company that owns the apartments.

Close to $1000 dollars was also raised.
