CHARLESTON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - The South Carolina branch of the Red Cross is looking for people who can donate platelets.
Officials say donors should schedule an appointment before Thursday to help meet a need.
Platelets are tiny cells in the blood that help form clots. For many, they help survive and fight cancer, diseases and injuries. Somebody needs platelets every 30 seconds, according to the Red Cross.
A number of Lowcountry Red Cross blood and platelet donation centers can be found here.
It's difficult to store platelets because they must be used within five days.
