Students bake up opportunities at CCSD school

CHARLESTON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - Typically, it's the students who line up for lunch, but at one Charleston County School District school on Friday, it was the teachers who were patiently waiting for their meal.

Students in R.B. Stall High School's Recipe for Success Bakery created a taco bar for faculty members in honor of Teacher Appreciation Week.

The bakery, through the school's Department of Special Education, aims to prepare students for a career following graduation.

"You have to learn responsibility. You have to take care of yourself and help your teammates out, too, when they need help," student William King said. "And make sure your station is clean."

The students also baked and created all the desserts at the school's recent prom.

"In the beginning of the year, we started with kids who have limited reading skills who couldn't follow a recipe for anything, and now they tell me what to do," special education teacher Hannah Schroeder-Iliff said.

The program was made possible through a state gr ant the school received three years ago.
