SUMMERVILLE, SC (WCSC) -

The Nexton Parkway Interchange is now open to traffic.

Vehicles began moving across at 6 a.m. after contractors removed barriers and construction equipment.

The entire project consists of constructing a new interchange on I-26 just west of Sheep Island Road. In addition, I-26 was widened from four to six lanes from MP 199 to MP 197. A portion of the project opened earlier in April.

“This incredible and much-needed interchange is one worth celebrating,” Berkeley County Supervisor Bill Peagler said in a statement. “Despite several weather events, including multiple hurricanes and a winter storm, this project stayed on track and will be open ahead of schedule. More importantly, Berkeley County turned a necessary road project, that was ignored prior to my administration, and expedited the work to ensure the public’s needs are met. The project sat still for nearly a decade, but I’m happy to announce its completion and celebrate the hard work of the dedicated crews involved.”

The project's estimated cost is $88 million in total with Berkeley County paying for $55 million. The SC State Ports Authority is funding $8 million, the South Carolina Transportation Infrastructure Bank is funding $22 million while the town of Summerville is funding $4 million, according to Berkeley County spokeswoman Carli Drayton.
