SCHP: SUV driver cited, 25 hospitalized after school bus involved in accident near Cottageville

COTTAGEVILLE, SC (WCSC) - A school bus that services Cottageville Elementary was on the way to the school when the bus was involved in an accident Tuesday morning on 17-A near Cottageville.

All 21 students on the bus (18 with minor injuries), the bus driver, the bus monitor and the two people in the Cadillac Escalade SUV were all hospitalized at Colleton County Medical Center. The SUV driver has been cited with driving too fast for conditions after hitting the bus, according to South Carolina highway patrol trooper Matt Southern.

"This morning after the bus accident we were notified by Fire and Rescue," Colleton County Medical Center CEO Jimmy Hiott said in a statement.
"We are treating 25 patients. No major injuries. We are working with the school district to discharge students to parents or legal guardians"

Both the bus and the SUV were driving south on 17A when the bus slowed to make a left turn onto Burr Hill Road.

Traffic is blocked on Cottageville Highway between Cottageville and Round O while crews work the accident.

Colleton County School District Spokeswoman Christine Stroble released the following statement:

In route to Cottageville Elementary School this morning, Bus #16 was involved in an accident.  As a precaution, twenty-one students are being transported to Colleton County Medical Center.  The accident is still under investigation by highway patrol.

The accident happened at 7:27 a.m.
