MT. PLEASANT, SC (WCSC) - Students at Wando High School are in mourning after a fellow student was killed in a motorcycle accident on Tuesday.
Dermot O'Leary, 18, died at the scene of the accident Tuesday morning.
It happened just before 8:30 on Highway 17 North at Carolina Park Boulveard in the Carolina Park neighborhood.
Mount Pleasant police say the motorcyclist swerved to avoid stopped traffic, sideswiped a car, and was thrown from the bike.
The principal of Wando recorded a message that was sent out to parents Tuesday afternoon asking for thoughts and prayers for the student's family.
A memorial service for O'Leary will be held on the Isle of Palms later this week.
His parents say they are still stunned and can't believe their son is gone.
The O'Learys say Dermot was on his way to Wando High when the accident happened.
They say he was getting ready to graduate and attend Trident Technical College.
His parents say Dermot will be remembered for his talent as an artist and always putting others before himself.
"He was adventurous, he was the kind of person who would do anything for anyone but he loved to challenge whatever anyone had out there," said Patrick O'Leary, Dermot's father.
"Dermot was someone that touched so many people in so many different ways," said Liz O'Leary, Dermot's mother." I think that you couldn't meet him and not know what a kind person he was."
A celebration of Dermot O'Leary's life is scheduled for Friday on the beach at the VFW post on Ocean Boulevard.
