CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Caleb Smith, a senior at Charleston County School of the Arts, is the Optimist Club International Oratorical champion for South Carolina, according to CCSD officials.

In a statewide oratorical contest in Sumter on May 5, Smith beat out nine other contestants from across the state.

With the win comes a $2,500 scholarship and trip to St. Louis University in St. Louis for the Optimist Club Regional and World Championship competitions in June.

The topic will be "Where are My Roots of Optimism?"

"It's my first time competing in the Optimist Club oratorical contest and I couldn't be anymore grateful and ecstatic than I am now," Smith says."The opportunity has been nothing short of amazing, challenging, and exhilarating. It has really made me work hard, and consequently, made me a better orator."

The St. Louis Competition is scheduled for June 27 to the 29.
