With the game tied at four in the ninth inning, Gardner-Webb’s (27-22, 12-10) Chandler Redmond hit a home run to provide his team the 7-4 walk-off win over Charleston Southern (15-32, 6-16) on Friday night.
Gardner-Webb swung hot bats throughout the game. In the ninth inning, back-to-back singles were followed by Redmond’s home run that gave them the win. The Runnin’ Bulldogs totaled 13 hits and scored in four of the first five innings. The Bucs also found success at the plate, scoring four runs on nine hits.
CSU took the first lead of the game in the top of the first inning. Mike Sconzo doubled and later scored on a single from Christian Maggio. Jason Miller followed Maggio with a base hit of his own that scored a run to give the Bucs a 2-0 lead.
Wil Sellers (4-1) was credited with the win for Gardner-Webb. He worked one and one third perfect innings with one strikeout.
Cody Smith (1-1) took the loss for CSU, allowing three runs on three hits.
News & Notes
This is the third straight game that has ended in a walk-off for CSU. They won the previous two over Winthrop last weekend.
Christian Maggio’s three-hit game gives him the team lead in batting average (.311)
Mike Sconzo has hit safely in six of has last seven games.
Daniel Johnson has allowed less than two earned runs in 16 appearances.
CSU continues their weekend series with Gardner-Webb on Saturday. First pitch for that game at Moss Baseball Stadium is set for 2 p.m.
