COLLETON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - A man was killed in a house fire in Walterboro.
The fire happened Saturday in the 200 block of Teakwood Drive.
Officials with Colleton County Fire and Rescue say at 6:37 p.m. an alert neighbor smelled smoke, went to investigate, saw the house fire and called 911.
"The neighbor believed the man was at home and identified the room she thought he would be occupying," CCFR officials said."This saved time for Firefighters."
A report states crews located the man in the master bedroom.
"The bedroom received heavy damage from the fire, but firefighters contained it to one room and the hallway outside the bedroom," CCFR officials said.
The rest of the house suffered smoke and heat damage.
"Fire-Rescue also notified the sheriff's office, SLED and the State Fire Marshal's Office which is normal procedure involving a fire death," CCFR officials said.
According to investigators, the fire started in the master bedroom, and the cause is under investigation.
