CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - The Spring 2018 Trailblaze Challenge in South Carolina has raised $400,000 for Make-A-Wish South Carolina, a new record for the biannual event.

Make-A-Wish SC gr ants wishes to children with life-threatening illnesses across South Carolina.

The Trailblaze Challenge is a 28.3 mile hike along the Foothills Trail in the Appalachian Mountains.

Our Investigative Reporter Carter Coyle and her husband Nick Mello joined the Spring Trailblazers this past Saturday.

The event takes place every Spring and Fall.

With summer-like temperatures this weekend, the hike was not easy!

"We've been training in the Lowcountry and had our endurance and mileage down," Coyle said. "But the up and down mountain terrain is a whole different ballgame. It was tough. The medics and volunteers cheering us on helped us get through. My husband physically pushed me up some hills!"

Mello added, "It was incredible. Knowing that our fundraising as a group will help make wishes come true this year? There's nothing that can beat that feeling. What we went through this weekend is nothing compared to parents who are sitting at the hospital with their sick children right now."
