Mt. Pleasant school plans to dismiss early Wednesday because of Wando Bridge closure

MT. PLEASANT, SC (WCSC) - A Mount Pleasant school says it will dismiss students early for the second day in a row Wednesday because of a bridge closure.

Palmetto Christian Academy allowed students to leave earlier than normal Tuesday, citing traffic issues with the closure of the westbound lanes of the Wando Bridge.

Students in Kindergarten through fourth grade dismissed at 1:15 p.m. while fifth through twelfth grades dismissed at 1:30 p.m.

Late Tuesday afternoon, school officials said they would dismiss early on Wednesday, then make a decision about their schedule going forward after a scheduled news conference from the state Department of Transportation.

SCDOT officials announced an emergency 48-hour closure of the westbound lanes of the James Edward Bridge Monday afternoon after inspectors discovered a snapped cable. The 48-hour window, they said, would give their crews time to inspect the structure and devise a plan to address the problem.

The SCDOT has called a news conference for Wednesday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. to update the status of the bridge.
